Be able to

Can

  • can — настоящее время

В отрицательных предложениях к обоим глаголам добавляется частица not: can/can’t, could/couldn’t.

Подлежащее + can/could + глагол

I can give you my number. –

I could give you my number but I don’t want to.

Подлежащее + can’t/couldn’t + глагол

I can’t give you my number. –

I couldn’t give you my number. –

Can/could + подлежащее + глагол

Can I give you my number? –

Could I give you my number? –

  • She canspeak several languages. –
  • They can’tdance very well.

Request or Question

Can I have a glass of water, please? –

Could I ask you to explain this in more detail, please? –

You can’t smoke on the plane. –

4. Для выражения удивления, сомнения, недоверия — Expression of surprise, doubt, and disbelief.

Can you really run a marathon? –

She can’t work 24/7, it’s insane! –
